After getting results, what next?
Primary School Leaving Examination. 4 letters that spell an acronym that sends shivers (or delight) down the spines of parents and children alike.
The PSLE is one of the major milestones in a child’s academic journey. Children are competitively assessed based on their academic abilities and it can be a rather stressful experience. However, it is important to keep in mind that PSLE alone does not determine your child’s future. There are many other factors that contribute to success in life, such as hard work, determination and resilience.
PSLE is one of the most daunting exams in Singapore for most students. Even after getting through the exam, some students still feel lost in thoughts on if they have to retake the exam or feel discouraged with their choices of secondary schools. It is important to encourage your child after they get their results. They may feel disappointed but make sure your children know that you believe in them and will support them no matter what.
This article explores different ways to keep your child motivated and encouraged after their PSLE results are announced. We will provide you with pointers on how you can help your children deal with disappointment, find their strengths, and how you can keep them going on a positive note.
Overcoming disappointments
Do not compare your children to others and pull down their confidence level. You should not get angry at your children when they are feeling upset about their poor results. Acceptance is key. You need to accept the fact that our children will have to go through difficult times to learn the best life lessons. Also, try to comfort them in order to help them overcome their disappointments.
It is natural for children to feel disappointed when they do not get their desired results. The best way to help your child overcome this feeling is by having an open conversation with them about it. When you have frank conversations with your children, they are less likely to feel disappointed.
Learning from mistakes
The PSLE exam determines your children’s educational path and future. As a parent you need to provide the necessary support for your children during this time of uncertainty. Learning from mistakes and analysing what went wrong in their preparation can help them understand why they didn’t do well in the exam. This will help them figure out why they made mistakes and also identify areas that require improvement so that they can make sure not to repeat the same mistakes again.
Staying motivated
Even though it is difficult, children should not be discouraged by the PSLE results. Instead they should be encouraged to pursue their interests, and aim to better themselves academically.. Parents should learn to appreciate their children, regardless of their PSLE scores. You should focus on the strengths that your children have demonstrated so far and motivate your children to do better the next time.
Believe in your child and let them know that you are there for them. Take a break and help your child heal. Spend more time as a family and if possible, go on a family trip together.
Moving Forward
The first step in moving forward is for your children to plan and set goals for the next year. Help your children shortlist a few secondary schools with good track records that they are interested in attending, then decide on one or two schools that suit their criteria best. Ask them to note down what they want to achieve in the next few years and how they are going to achieve it.
Once you have decided on which school your children want to attend, ask them to plan for the future by thinking about what career path they want to take and how they can prepare to pursue that path. Encouraging your child to do this helps them focus on the present and future rather than brooding over the past.
So far we have discussed how you, as a parent, can help your child move forward during this difficult phase, but what about you ? How can you as a parent deal with it ?
Here are some pointers for you to take note of after the PSLE results are out:
- Do not react impulsively if your child’s results are not what you expected it to be. Rather step away for a while and gather your thoughts before speaking to your children.
- First congratulate them no matter how much they have scored, because in the end it is all their efforts. Recollect about the days when they worked hard at academics in spite of difficult circumstances they went through at home or at school.
- Do not be in a hurry to discuss their performance. Give some time for them to recover from their feelings. You should comfort your child and help them move forward and focus on what can be done next.
- Ensure your child that you will always have their back no matter what. Listen to them and then respond in an understanding way rather than imposing your thoughts and ideas on them.
We hope this article helps you and your children handle emotions better post announcement of PSLE results, and make the right decisions going forward.
All the best! 🙂
