We have just entered the end-of-year season, and surely many children would have already planned to use this time to laze around and stay away from their academics. . But with the upcoming examinations coming up, this blog entry is catered specifically to help students pick up tips on how to make full use of their PSLE marking holidays, from 17 October to 20 October 2022.
Create a plan
Help your children create a plan to utilise their holidays to prepare for their upcoming PSLEs. Make a solid revision plan allocating enough time for studies and also time for them to have fun and relax. Sticking to a planned routine is the best way for your children to prepare. This way, they won’t procrastinate and push off studying to the last minute. Even if it is for a short time every day, make sure they have a session for studies.
Group study sessions
Suggest to your children to have a group study session and help host it if required. When you discuss and learn subjects, you will understand different perspectives and will also help in clearing doubts and solving questions efficiently. You can discuss with other parents and have sessions at a common place so that they will get familiarised and feel more comfortable with the learning environment. You and other parents can take turns providing refreshments and other things to help the children with their study sessions.
Motivate and reward your children
Make sure you let your children know that you appreciate them putting in effort even during their holidays to prepare for their exams. Let them know that you are interested in their progress and make sure to applaud and encourage them when they make good progress and motivate them and offer support when they seem to be struggling.
Prepare a good learning environment for them at home
Make sure they have a quiet and peaceful place where they will be able to study. Make sure their siblings or anyone else at home don’t disturb them when they are studying. You also have to keep in mind to not bring your problems from your office to home and disturb your children’s mental state. Make sure everything is calm and happy at home. Offer your children emotional support and let them know you are rooting for them.
Keep a watch on their health and sleep schedules
In a way, routines help our children practice certain things again and again until it becomes a habit for them. Simple actions such as tying their own shoelaces, packing their school bag, and getting dressed for school, can all be taught to them by making them practise on a regular basis. These are actions that will develop your children into well-mannered and independent individuals.
Mock exams
We cannot emphasise enough how important mock exams are for students preparing for exams. They can be considered their best helpers. Let your children try out as many as they can and check their progress. These tests help your children get familiarised with the question patterns and also help them with their time management skills during exams. There are many online resources you can access and tutor services that offer these mock tests for your children to try out.
Get help if needed
If it seems like your children have trouble comprehending what they need to learn and are facing blockers while learning, it is better to get them help. You can check out the recordings of 88tuition’s live lessons and other services that can offer your children help.
If your child’s needs are more psychological, like being too stressed and having exam anxiety, you can take them to a counsellor to talk, and try to understand what is affecting them.
Have activities to help cool them down
Too much of their studies can be stressful and detrimental to their exam prep. Make sure to give them ample time and let them do things they want during the holidays. You can plan fun family activities and events to let them loosen up and take some pressure off them. Tell your children not to stay cooped up at home at all times and to go out and get fresh air.
You can get them books to read, supplies to do crafts, and support their hobbies and leisure activities. Plan family picnics and go out for hikes. Make sure you take some time off to spend with your family.
Keep some time aside to reflect and rethink
Help your children reflect on their actions and revision sessions. Check where they have made mistakes and help them correct them. Allot more time to topics they are lacking in and help them form strategies to tackle them better.
We hope these will help your children gain a better edge in their upcoming examinations. We wish you all the best! 🙂
