“Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving; we get stronger and more resilient.” – Steve Maraboli
During the toughest times, even the strongest ones fumble. But they never give up. They build up their confidence and face the situations with resilience. As parents and teachers, we would have gone through several hurdles in our lives. The way we have handled those adversities has made us the individuals we are now. We need to help our children learn to withstand and bounce back from situations right from a very young age.
Here are a few tips to help your children stay resilient, especially during exam time.
Keep working on the basics
“Rome wasn’t built in a day.”
It takes years of experience to cultivate resilience in oneself. It is a constant ongoing process filled with experiences and efforts that help an individual become resilient. It is more about reinforcing the same concepts to our children again and again so that they become masters of the situation. If our children underperform in an examination, we need to make sure that they put in considerate efforts to perform well in the next exam. We can’t come out victorious in all the situations, but we can always bounce back with more grit and determination. These qualities need to be imbibed in our children right from a young age.
Master your emotions
Developing emotional intelligence is really important in building confident adults. Ms Jana Dawson, Director of Academic and Training Development at The School of Positive Psychology, mentions the strategy – “Name it to tame it.” What this means is that – if a person is able to identify the emotions they are going through and express it in the right way, they will be able to overcome challenges a lot faster.
So, how can you develop this skill in your children?
Encourage your children to be expressive. Let them narrate their emotions to you in simple as well as critical situations. This will help you better understand your children. Moreover, they will be able to understand their emotions better.
Build Problem Solving skills
The ability to solve problems can help children build resilience. Mr Chong from Focus on the Family Singapore suggests has come up with the Sodas guide to help children to overcome complex situations:
- Identify the Situation
- Explore the possible Options to solve the problem
- Think about the Disadvantages associated with each option
- Think about the Advantages associated with each option
- Pick the best Overall Solution weighing down the advantages and disadvantages.
This technique can be made best use of during the exam time to figure out the ideal learning method, and prepare a proper study schedule.
Keeping your mind and body fresh
Regular exercise, practising mindfulness and having social interactions can boost the overall well-being of our children, thereby making them resilient. Following a proper routine is another factor that helps build discipline and resilience in our children. It is really important for all of us to start the day on a positive note. A short walk in the morning definitely has its perks – it helps keep your mind and body fresh on a daily basis. Starting the day on a positive energetic note will keep you empowered for the entire day. You will have a fresh and open mind to learn new things. Also, it helps children with their recalling capabilities. Learning subject concepts with a fresh mind ensures that they will be able to recall the concepts while answering questions.
Develop Self-compassion
Self-compassion is important to building resilience. Children need to be kind to themselves first. Only then will they be able to be compassionate towards others. Positive self-talks need to be encouraged in our children. This will help them look at themselves as a stronger individual – one who can handle situations with ease.
Instead of rescuing your children from complex situations, try to be a coach. Encourage them and provide them with valuable inputs that will help them encounter the situation with grit and determination.
Build on your strengths
It is important for children to have a strong understanding of their strengths. It is with our strengths that we will be able to overcome adverse situations. You need to do “strength-spotting” in your children at a very young age. Keep reminding your children about their strengths, which will keep them always confident. For example, if your child helped his/her friend in a difficult situation, he/she possesses compassion and problem-solving skills. Reassuring your children of their skills and capabilities will help them stay confident and perform well in their daily lives.
We hope these pointers are helpful in bringing up your kids as resilient individuals. With the exams fast-approaching, we strongly hope that they will be able to make use of these tips to come out in flying colours. All the best! 🙂
