Supporting your child’s tutor
With our children having been in school for the past 3 weeks, it is only a matter of time before parents start scrambling to find them tutors to support their learning. The present educational system demands a lot from children. So, it is only natural that parents sometimes hire additional help to help their children keep up with all these academic demands. There are countless tuition agencies and private tutors that offer their services to help your children excel in their studies. But many parents often take it for granted and don’t bother to offer support to these professionals. There are many things that you can do to optimise the tutoring sessions and help your child achieve their fullest potential.
Place your trust in them
It might be difficult for you to not be anxious and completely trust a person with your children. Tutors require your complete confidence to make a difference. We agree that it might be difficult to do so. So, make sure you thoroughly check the details of the tuition centre or the tutor. Ask for references, and referrals from trusted friends and family. Once you have selected a tutor or a tuition centre after all these inquiries, trust your children with them.
Don’t keep hovering over them
While it is okay to keep an eye on how your children are doing, it is not okay to constantly hover over them. Some parents insist on being in the room at all times and often chime in with their remarks during the study hours. Tutors can’t do their job if you keep watch over every action of theirs and distract them. Some people aren’t able to perform well under constant watch. It might affect your children’s attention too. So, don’t be that parent.
Respect them
Many parents forget that teaching someone is not easy. It takes a tremendous amount of effort and patience to do it. Never disrespect or act without thinking with your children’s tutors. They too are humans like you and have emotions and feelings. Just because you pay them doesn’t give you any right to order them around or treat them without dignity.
Prepare a good place for the sessions
Allot a room or a quiet place in your home for the lessons. Make sure no one interrupts them during the time. Keep the TV, mobile phones and other distractions turned off during the time.
Respect their time
Many parents take this lightly. They keep the tutors waiting while they take care of personal matters or while the children are late from other activities. Try not to do that. If they have given you a time slot for teaching your children, make sure you keep it intact. Be punctual and have your children ready to start their sessions on time. Do not keep them waiting.
Don’t contact them out of work hours
It is natural for parents to have the private number of their children’s tutors. But make sure you don’t use it to disturb them out of their work hours. They too have things of their own to do. So, let’s all try to respect this.
Keep your children well-behaved
Talk to your children and make sure that they understand how to act towards their tutors. Unruly and misbehaving children are every tutor’s worst nightmare. Make sure your children respect their tutor and do what they are asked to do. Do not take the side of your children when they make unreasonable demands or if they throw temper tantrums during lessons. Support the tutors by making sure your children offer their full concentration and effort towards these sessions.
Communicate with them
Don’t leave everything to them and expect results. Make sure you communicate with them and understand if there is anything you or your children have to do or make changes. Discuss their lesson plans, and ask if there is anything you can do to help them.
Make timely payments
We are sure none of you would like it if your payments are delayed. It can mess with your plans. So, why do many parents think it is okay not to pay their children’s tutors on time? Make sure the payments are prompt. It can help motivate the tutors and have a better attitude towards you and your children.
Don’t demand immediate results
No tutor can make your children score high marks overnight. Give them time to make changes and show you results. Communicate with them and see what their plans are. Be patient with them. No tutor will be willing to help your children if you keep on with your unreasonable demands. Having tutors changed frequently won’t do your child any good either.
Make sure your children complete the tasks assigned to them
Tutoring is not an easy job. Depending on the children, they have to adapt and change their plans and methods. Tutors have to constantly deal with overbearing parents. Even after all that, they try their best to help your children. So, try to make sure you support them the best way you can. As parents, there are also online portals that we can direct our children to if we need to give them supplementary support. We wish you and your children all the best in your tuition journey! 🙂
