“Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.” – Oscar Wilde.
Dear students, mistakes have the capability to turn you into a better version of yourself. So, never shy away from making new attempts. It can be in the stream of studies, your daily routine, physical fitness, or even related to gaming. Never stop trying and never stop learning!
As the new term begins, let’s learn more about the common studying mistakes that your children should avoid.
Not having a plan
Having a study plan is crucial to scoring good grades in any exam. Most students approach their exams without a plan. Make sure your children don’t make this mistake. Help them make a study plan and a timetable. The way you should go about it is as follows:
- Write down your goals
- Assess strengths and weaknesses
- Allot breaks in between
- Leave room only for unforeseen events
- Make sure they follow the plan
Waiting until the last minute
It is yet another mistake most students are guilty of making; procrastinating and ending up doing last minute revision just before the exams. Follow up with your children on what they learn every day at school. Make sure they revise their learnings periodically. It can help them build memory power and be less stressed. Ensure your children start their exam preparation early so they can allocate enough time for each subject and have enough time left to revise.
Not knowing how you study best
Every child is unique. So, it is only natural for them to learn best using different methods. There is no single method of learning that is suited for all. Some learn better by writing, some by seeing, some by listening, and many use a combination of different styles. So, going forward without understanding how your children learn best will not do you much good. Try to know which style suits your children best and help them apply it to their exam preparation.
Studying in chronological order
Many students go about studying in chronological order. They learn lessons in the order they are taught in class. Some also go about making the exam preparation plan according to when the examinations are. It is something you have to pay attention to. Instead of going in such an order, prioritise subjects and topics that you need to work on more.
Not asking for help
If there are topics that your children don’t understand even after revising multiple times, they should ask for help. Tell your children that it is ok to ask for help if they need it. You can encourage them to ask their teachers or their friends. Children don’t ask questions for fear of being ridiculed. Assure that it won’t happen and tell them that it’s good to have doubts.
Not using mock exams
While preparing for any exam, knowing the structure of the exam and getting used to answering it at the optimal time is vital to scoring good marks. Many students overlook this fact and as a result, their performance won’t be as good. Make sure your children attend as many mock exams as they can. It can help them understand where they stand and what they have to work more on. It also helps your children manage time during the exam and teaches them to handle stress.
Long study sessions
Continuously studying for hours, for days, without taking a break seems like a good idea, but it actually hurts your prep. Your brain needs rest too. Continually going through the subjects won’t help you learn any better. All you are doing is overburdening your brain and making it harder for it to retain information. Tell your children to take breaks in between study sessions.
Highlighting whole pages
Reading for the sake of highlighting won’t do your children any good. Marking up entire pages will not help you better memorise them. You should teach your children how to read better and make notes. Tell them to highlight only the most important terms.
Multitasking
The human brain is not designed for multitasking. Many people boast about being able to do it. But they are wrong. When multitasking, you can’t pay proper attention to any of the tasks you are engaged in. The quality of your attention is more important than the number of tasks you are performing at a time. So, try to focus on only one thing.
Distractions
Make sure your children get rid of all the distractions before sitting down to study. Put all devices in silent mode and don’t allow anyone to intrude on their study space. Make sure your children are not distracted by notifications from social media or any other apps. You can install apps that help turn off other unessential functions during study time so that your children can focus.
Solo studying
Studying in a group has many benefits. It helps your children see and understand different perspectives of subject concepts. They can compare their ideas, thoughts and clear each other’s doubts. You can plan and host study sessions in your house and make sure you keep an eye to ensure that they are actually studying and not lazing around.
We hope you and your children find these pointers really helpful in avoiding the most common mistakes while studying. However, certain behaviours and learning styles cannot be set right at the first attempt itself. This is why mistakes are important. Mistakes remain a critical element in the success stories of many famous personalities. 🙂
We wish you and your children a very happy and successful 2022!
