Holidays are out, school is in! Unfortunately, the holiday season is over and along with it, 2021 has just come to an end. With 2021 being more or less similar to 2020, most of us had to spend time within the four walls of our home. However, just like any other year, we would have experienced a lot of learning and came across life-changing experiences. With just 4 days into the new year, it’s time to reflect on the recent holidays and the year that has just passed. Take some time to sit down (with your children) and reflect on the past year.
Let your kids do the talking
Listen to their experiences and help them reflect on what they did during the holidays. Help them analyse and think about all the lessons they learned from their experiences over time. You can ask them questions and let them arrive at the lessons on their own. It can be a great learning experience for them.
Holidays are usually spent loitering around, spending time with friends and family. Most people waste the time they have available thinking that it’s just holidays and so it’s not time to work. But people seldom understand that holidays are the perfect time to work or learn, where you are not pressured by any other external forces. It is the perfect time to become better versions of yourself.
If there is one habit to start, start journaling. It can help keep track of how time is spent and habits are analysed. Think about the various activities that go on in the day and how the level of productivity can be improved.
Reflect on your happy memories
Look back and think about all the happy memories you made this year. The world can sometimes be cruel and an unforgiving place. With the pandemic claiming the lives of many of our loved ones, people felt unexplainable sorrow these past 2 years. But now, it’s time to let go. Think of the happy memories you had in recent times. The time you spent with your loved ones, the holidays you had, try to think of only the happy memories. Reflect and draw strength from those memories and let them drive you forward.
Express gratitude to the people in your life
Use this time to look back and reflect on the relationships in your life. Remember who you are thankful for and let them know you are grateful for having them in your lives. It will make them happy and feel appreciated. It can bring you closer together.
Encourage your children to get a job if they meet the age criterion
It is a good idea to get your children acquainted with the dealings of the world. Getting a part-time job is the best way to do that. During their holidays, they have more time in their hands than they know what to do about. So, ask around if any of your local places need a hand. It will help your children learn about earning for themselves and practise better habits. Once they start working and earning on their own, they will come to appreciate the value of the things they have in life and understand how hard it is to make a living. It will make them more mature, thoughtful, and responsible people. It can also help them learn how to better interact with people and teach them values like patience and honesty. It can help them become team players and also might bring out hidden potentials in them.
If your kids are old enough, encouraging them to do part-time jobs may be a good idea. Having a part-time job can also add structure to their life. It is something they do every day, so it becomes a habit and gets integrated into their life. Try to associate other things to that part and help improve their routine. For example, walking to and from the job every day can be a little physical activity to keep your children healthy. You can ask them to try going to the gym on their way from work. Associating things with their work schedule can help them get it done.
Once they start earning, make sure you teach them how to manage their money. Make sure they are spending it responsibly. But don’t stop them from buying things they want with the money if it seems reasonable.
A job for a teenager can be a valuable life experience, one which they can gain life skills from and look back and think of as a fond memory.
Encourage your children to work on a personal project
For the younger ones, help them work on something productive- like a personal project. Maybe they can work on a project based on the generation gap – they can interview their parents and grandparents, and get to know how their lifestyle was and how it is now. Working on a personal project will keep your children engaged and also let them learn a whole lot about life.
Work on yourself
Start working on creating some healthy habits. The year is coming to an end. So, try to start some new habits that can help you along your path towards your future. Make a plan and stick to it. Get your whole family involved too. You are more likely to succeed when you have people working with you towards the same goal.
Give back
Reflecting on your holidays, you might realise all the blessings you received during this holiday season and the entire year. So spend some time giving back to the world. If you have the time, try to do some volunteer work in your neighbourhood. Get your children to go with you. Help a neighbour or a friend who is in need. Teach your children these values too, so that they can carry on your actions in the future all by themselves.
Holidays are the best time for you and your children to reflect on yourself and take action to be better versions of yourselves. We hope you find these helpful. We wish you all the best. And once again, Happy new year! 🙂
