“The Earth does not belong to us: we belong to the Earth.” – Chief Seattle
This quote is so true, isn’t it?
We are inhabitants of this beautiful planet – Earth. But we aren’t its permanent owners. We need to take proper care of our planet for us to lead healthy lives. Also, for us to leave behind a healthy environment for our children, we need to make sure that we follow the best environmental practices and also raise environmentally sensitive kids. Make them a part of the solution that saves our nature.
So, here’s the important question – how can you educate your children about the reality of our degrading environment and instil responsibility in them to protect the earth?
Take your children out to look at nature
Take your children outside often to make them feel the true bliss of nature. You can’t expect them to be cooped up inside all the time and care about the environment. Try to get them to enjoy the beauty of nature. Go for walks, play outside with your kids, lie down looking at the night sky. Once they start enjoying these little moments they will develop this love to embrace our nature.
Educate your children
It is most probable that children are not aware of the need to conserve the environment, and they might not be aware of the various threats it is facing. Explain to them why it is a topic that deserves their attention. Talk about the importance of conserving nature and let them ask you any questions they might have. Children are curious by nature, and they will doubt everything around them. So, instead of saying they have to do something, it is better to explain why they should play their part to conserve the environment.. Talk to them about how their choices impact the environment, and how their individual footprints can create a rippling effect.
Teach your children about recycling
Teach your children not to throw away their old things. Teach them to reuse things as much as possible, and recycle those they can no longer reuse. Recycling and reusing can be fun activities. Take an item that has outlived its use. Sit down, and discuss with your children what alternative uses you can find for it. For example, you can make craft items out of old plastics such as flower pots, and so on. This can be a fun way to educate your children to be sensitive towards nature.
Lead by example
Children grow up watching your actions. So, instead of limiting your care for the environment in just words, make sure it reflects on your actions too. Be responsible and environmentally conscious adults, and your children will grow up to be the same.
Teach your children to be energy-aware
Teach your children to switch off the devices and lights when they are not in use. Teach them not to waste too much water while showering. Also, emphasise not to waste food. Make them understand the consequences the environment will face if they don’t save the resources they have access to and how it will affect them and others.
Use audio and video resources
There are many resources you can use to teach your children about the environment. Make them watch channels like discovery, Nat-geo, or animal planet. Use YouTube to convey information about the importance of saving our environment. Sir David Attenborough’s Planet Earth is a very good video series you can let your children see.
Take them to a wildlife park or national park
When you have time, try to visit a national park or wildlife park. There you will be able to see different wildlife and plant life which your children might not have seen before. Seeing all these can make them aware of how vast and beautiful nature is and that the earth belongs to other living creatures too.
Teach them to have compassion for all
Show your children compassion and teach them to have empathy towards all living things around them. If possible, get your children a pet from a young age. It can help build compassion and responsibility in children, even if it is a goldfish or hamster. The size of the pet does not matter, the real intention is for them to get an opportunity to learn how to be responsible.
Encourage your children to use public transport
The ever-growing number of private vehicles adds to air pollution. Also, the increasing demand for vehicles causes the auto industry to over-exploit the resources available in nature. Promoting the use of public transportation can help ease the demand and also the pressure on the environment due to that.
Get them involved in gardening if you can
If you have some space in your house, grow a few small vegetable plants and get your children involved. It can help instil a love for nature and taking care of things. Imagine their happiness and excitement once the seeds they planted are coming to life!
Volunteer together
Many volunteer organizations work towards conserving the environment. Sign up yourself and encourage your family to participate.
You can’t just make your children eco-conscious overnight. It is a slow process that requires constant effort. The earlier you start teaching, the sooner they understand. Start today and guide your children on their rightful path. Let’s together build a healthy and sustainable environment for us and the generations to come! 🙂
