Finally! The long awaited school holidays are approaching and the best part of the news is that the world is slowly opening up after nearly two years of travel restrictions!
Many of you might be planning to make trips out of Singapore. But while it may be approved by the authorities, we still need to be careful. The pandemic is still raging, and travel can put you or your family at risk if proper caution is not taken. For those of you planning to travel outside Singapore soon, we have some tips and advisories.
What to keep in mind?
Vaccination
If you or your family members are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, try to avoid trips outside Singapore as much as you can. But if you do have to go, follow every safety measure.
Singapore doesn’t allow vaccination for children under 12. In case you are travelling with your children, check out our previous blog on travelling with unvaccinated children to know more on the topic.
The vaccination slips received in Singapore cannot be used for verification in foreign countries. Documents in apps like TraceTogether or HealthHub also won’t do. Vaccinated individuals should digitally authenticate their records using Notαrise. After authenticating, it will send a digital vaccination certificate and QR code for easy verification to you via email or the Singpass app.
Requirements
Look up the requirements for travelling abroad. Vaccinated travellers can travel quarantine free to certain countries under the Vaccinated Travel Lane system. The vaccinated travel lane currently allows travel to Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. South Korea’s VTL just started recently on Nov 15. Read more about it on: https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/vtl/requirements-and-process.
Check the requirements of the country you are visiting. Check whether they require any pre-departure checks, digital vaccination certificates, or health reports. Keep them prepared in time.
For coming back to Singapore, you have to follow entry procedures. If you are a Singapore citizen travelling from a country in the VTL list, you can enter without quarantine or entry permission. For more details, check the requirements on: https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/arriving/overview.
Check the travel rules of the country you want to visit
If you don’t have a particular location in mind, choose a country from the VTL list. You can avoid quarantines and can travel at ease.
You can look up other details like requirements to enter, whether the country is safe to visit, and the covid protocols in effect there at: https://www.mfa.gov.sg/Where-Are-You-Travelling-To.
Covid tests
Some countries might require you to take pre-travel covid tests. Complete all required tests early and keep the documents with you. If you visit a clinic less than 38 hours before the flight, you might not get the results in time. So, make sure you go in early and get your tests done.
For the test, bring these with you:
- Identity card (for Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents, and Long-Term Pass Holders)
- Passport
- Flight booking details showing the departure timing
The test results will be digitised and given to you. You can then digitally authenticate and convert it into a QR code. It can make boarding and emigration clearance smoother. If you can’t receive a digital report, you can request a hard copy to take with you.
Travel advisory for children
- Make sure you inform their school about your travel plans.
- Even if you are not required to stay in quarantine after your return, take caution for two days after return and observe yourself and your children for any symptoms.

- Take vaccine shots for flu and any other disease per the advice of your child’s doctor.
- Make sure your children regularly sanitise their hands and are practicing hygiene in public places.
- Keep an eye on their food and actions during the visit.
Precautions
- Monitor your family’s health regularly. In case of any symptoms of covid or other issues, seek treatment immediately.
- Carry essential supplies like sanitisers, alcohol wipes, a few gloves, any essential medicines, a thermometer, and a pulse-oximeter.
- Make sure you and your family wear masks and protective equipment during the trip.
- When you are visiting the place, keep a few self-administrated covid testing kits to use if necessary.
- Make sure you have travel insurance that covers covid treatment and any other emergencies.
- Look up details of hospitals and helplines in the place you are visiting.
- If you are visiting a country where the local language is unknown to you, look up a few key phrases that will allow you to communicate in an emergency.
Final Checklist:
- Vaccine and Health Certificates
- Check requirements in the visiting country
- Get the covid test in time.
- Don’t forget safety essentials
