Yes!! The sheer joy in Primary 6 students all over Singapore can be felt , since the beginning of October 2021. The long-awaited, much anticipated PSLEs are all over, and we currently reside in the vacation phase before the results come out and the stressful admission procedures begin.
For sure, it is not just the children who are happy and relieved that the exams are over. Since a few weeks have passed since the end of the exams, we are sure most kids are bored now and may be wondering what to do. We have some suggestions for you. Also, the vacation should not be all about play. You may want to get your children prepared for what’s coming next. So read on!
Plan activities with your children
Take some time off and spend it with your children. These are moments in life that you won’t be getting back. You can go for picnics, visit amusement parks and other attractions. You can plan activities like a day cooking with children and playing games.
Travel
The world is opening back up, and many places are now accepting visitors. Plan a vacation with your children before the start of the school year. It can be a change of pace for you too. Make sure you are vaccinated and take proper precautions for your children. If you want to travel abroad, check out our article on travelling abroad with unvaccinated children.
Bonding with children
Spend some time getting to know more about your child. Talk to them and address any issues they might be having. Work on their communication skills. Help them overcome any insecurities or issues they might be facing. It can help them prepare for their new journey ahead.
Plan for the next step
The vacation is not all about play and fun. You have to think about your children’s future too. The results of the PSLEs will be coming out by the 22nd of November, and soon the admission procedure for secondary school will begin. So, what do you need to keep in mind?
- Know your options
Before you make any decisions, it is vital to know what is there for you to choose from. Secondary school offers two courses: Express Course and the Normal Course.
1. Express Course
It has two programs. One is a 4-year program leading to the O-level exams. The second program is the Integrated Programme, a 6-year course leading to the GCE A-Level examination, International Baccalaureate Diploma, or NUS High School Diploma.
2. Normal Course
The normal course offers two choices:
Normal(Academic)
It is a 4 or 5-year course leading to the GCE N-Level examination in secondary 4. Students in N(A) have the option to switch over to Express courses at the end of Secondary 1 or 2 if their results are good enough. Eligible students can attend the GCE O-Level examination in Secondary 5.
Normal(Technical)
It is a 4-year course leading to the N(T)-Level examination in Secondary 4. The General Certificate of Education Normal (Technical) earned from this course will allow students to enter NITEC. After completing two years of education from Nitec, these students can enrol in polytechnics based on their GPAs.
There are also additional courses that offer specialization in subjects like mathematics, arts, and sports. Visit the MOE website to know more about these courses and their eligibility criteria to join.
Talk to your children about their preferences
Choosing a school should not be just the parent’s decision. You have to involve your children in it. Talk to them and try to find out their interests and what their dreams are. Help them choose a path they would feel happy to follow. Do not pressure them into joining a course they don’t like. Understand your child’s strengths and weaknesses, and make the right decision.
Look up different schools and the facilities they offer
Before choosing a school, look up their websites or visit them in person if possible. Try to learn more about their faculty, the co-curricular activities they offer and also try to get inputs from seniors who have graduated from that school. It can help you decide whether it is suitable for your child or not.
Check out the fee structure
It is vital you do so. Make sure you can afford the tuition fee and you are financially prepared for it. Look up any scholarship or aid your child is eligible for and apply early. Don’t wait till the last minute.
Dear Children, make the vacation time productive!
Instead of spending the whole day playing games, hanging out with friends, or staring at your screens, allocate some time every day for activities that will help you improve yourselves. Remember that you are not wasting time. You are wasting the precious moments of your life. We have a list of activities you can try out.
- Read books
