“The best lightning rod for your protection is your own spine.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Only children who have a strong sense of self-belief can achieve any aspiration in life. It is hard for others to believe in you and support you if you don’t trust yourself.
So, how can you help your children grow up with self-belief?
Let them be themselves
The best thing you can do is to let them be themselves. To believe in oneself, a person needs to be comfortable and fully accepting of who they are. For a child, they form their sense of right and wrong by watching their parents. So, when interacting with your children, make sure that you don’t make them uncomfortable about who they are or belittle them. Show them respect, however young they are.
Don’t criticise or tease them for being who they are. The impressions that form when they are young play a vital role in their character development. So, be careful of your actions when they are present. Don’t overly criticise, tease or insult them for acting the way they are. Don’t make them feel like they are not adequate or they aren’t good enough. Mind your language in front of them. Don’t call them by any names or use harsh words that can hurt their self-image.
Talk to them
A healthy relationship with the family is essential for good character and brain development. Have regular conversations with your children. Talk about their issues and help them overcome any challenges. It can help them rely on you when needed, and you can gain a better understanding of them.
Talk about their friends. The company one keeps is crucial. Make sure that your child’s friends don’t bully or belittle them. Make sure that they are in good company that helps them grow.
Praise them when they do good
Praise and reward your children when they do good and achieve things, but don’t criticise them too much when they make mistakes. Rather, help them understand where they have gone wrong, and what improvements they can make. It can be a demotivating factor for their self-belief development.
Spend time with them
One of the vital gifts a parent can give their child is their time. Putting aside time for your children every day can show them how important they are to you. It will help them develop a sense of importance and be self-confident people. Knowing that they are loved and valued will boost their confidence and self-worth.
Show them by example
Show them how you believe in yourself and act on it. Nothing can guide a child better than their parents who show it by example.
Let them make their decisions
From a young age itself, give your children the necessary freedom and let them start making life decisions. It will help them become responsible and confident adults.
Make sure they know you love them and accept them
Make sure your children know that you got their backs – that you will support and love them no matter what. Your unconditional love and support can help them believe in themselves more than anything else can.
Don’t compare them to others
Comparisons make children feel little and inadequate. Make sure that you never do it. If you want them to improve, teach them to compete against themselves, to chase their goals, and better their performance rather than to try to beat someone else.
Teach them to voice their opinions and feelings
Encourage your children to have opinions on different matters and voice their opinions. Do not silence them when they speak their mind. Listen to them and provide valid arguments and correct them if they are wrong.
Teach them the importance of standing up for themselves. It can help develop self-confidence and decision-making skills in them. Tell them to uphold their ideals and even defend them if necessary. But teach them to do it respectfully. Standing up for oneself doesn’t mean trampling on another person’s opinions and views.
Teach them to handle failure
Teach your children that it is ok to fail and that sincere effort towards something is what matters. When they fail, act as their support. Teach them not to let success go to their heads.
Teach them self-reliance
Teach them to take care of themselves. Even if an adult is not with them, make sure they can complete the essential tasks. But also make sure that they know to reach out for help when in need. Start small. Tell them to make their bed after they get up. Teach them how to dress up for any occasion and interact with people.
Teach them proper etiquette like- table manners, how to talk on the phone, and how to behave in social situations. Teaching all this can lead to your children being more confident and well behaved.
Helping your children grow up with self-belief is very important as it is one of the first steps they need to make to become self-accomplished adults who can fight and succeed in this competitive world. So, try out these tips and help them grow up to be individuals you and society can be proud of. All the best! 🙂
