“That’s where the future lies, in the youth of today.”
– Willie Stargell
National Youth Day in Singapore is on the first Sunday of July every year, and the following Monday is a holiday for schools. It coincides with the beginning of the second academic semester of the year and this year’s Youth Day falls on the 4th of July!
Why is Youth Day important?
The future of every country lies in her youth. Youth Day functions as a day to recognize the role of youth in our society and as a day to raise awareness of the issues faced by them. It is a day to cherish the spirit of youth and provide them with a platform to the voices that will be the future of the country. On this occasion, we must try to ensure that they are equipped with the knowledge and wisdom to lead the world to a bright future.
Young people all over the world face different mental and social issues every day that go unnoticed. The number of cases of depression in children and young adults and other mental illnesses has increased in the last few years. The pressure and expectation from family and society often contribute to this. On this day, we must take the time to address their issues and celebrate this most beautiful time in their life.
In Singapore, those between the ages of 13-21 are considered youth. This is such a beautiful period in the lives of our children – the time where they are energetic, full of dreams, and eager to change the world. This is a period of time that they will never be getting back. Looking back at your life, you will realize how important it is. It is a time to celebrate and cherish, to make the most out of it.
So, celebrating Youth Day and making sure your children’s youth is celebrated is the duty of every parent.
How to celebrate the Youth of your children?
Community and Social Events
Every year, the government and various organizations conduct special events and programs to celebrate Youth Day.
Try to find out about such events near you, and you can get your children to attend them. They provide valuable experience and insight to children and young adults. They can be motivating and informative. Try to ensure that they take part in at least one event they are interested in.
Due to the pandemic, there might be fewer events than usual, and many might be online. If you plan to visit local gatherings, check out the government-issued mandates about them and take safety measures.
Spend time with your children
It is something you won’t ever get back- the youth of your children. Once they grow up, you will miss not spending enough time with them. Try to make this day special for them, one that they as well as you will cherish forever.
Talk to them about their dreams, aspirations, their worries. Just listen to their thoughts. Don’t insult them or take their issues or dreams lightly.
Talk to them about your youth, your dreams, and how you would do things differently if you were to go back. It can help them gain a perspective on their life.
Plan activities of your own
You can gather your children and a few close friends and plan fun activities for them. Buy them snacks and make it an enjoyable day. Keep in mind that the pandemic is ongoing and don’t make the gathering too big. It would be better if it is just you and your family members.
Watch movies with your family. Choose movies that are appropriate to the theme of the day. Try to pick ones that can motivate your children
Teach your children to celebrate their youth and make the most out of it
Try to instil curiosity in them and teach them to explore. Tell them it is ok to ask questions and be confused about life. Encourage them to dream and take risks to follow them. This is the time when they can do that. Make sure that they realize that they are going through the best years in their lives.
Help them be self-sufficient. Make them realize their strengths and weaknesses. Teach them that it is ok to fail but not to avoid something due to fear of failure.
Teach them to have a positive outlook and not let the world break them. The issues and pressure faced by our children daily are immense. Pressure to study, get a job, become financially stable, contribute to society- the list goes on and on. Try to ease some of this burden. Be someone they can talk to and lean on.
This youth day, take the time to cherish your children’s youth. It is often said that youth is not an age, but a state of mind. While you enjoy and celebrate your child’s youth, celebrate for yourself too, try to find that bit of youth left in you. It is never too late. 🙂
Happy Youth Day everyone!
