“Take care of the earth, and she will take care of you.” It’s yet another environmental day, where has time flown to? Every year, we all get conscious about the environment and take pledges to protect the only liveable habitat that we have. We even tweet and post on Instagram with the hashtag #WorldEnvironmentDay showing our support towards protecting our environment. But then, a few days pass, and everyone forgets about it for another year.
It’s high time we change that!
Protect our Saviour
We get everything we need from the environment. The air we breathe, water to drink, food to eat, and all the other raw materials we require. There is no survival possible without depending on it. But, the environment has been degraded and eroded by human activities throughout the years. We have been exploiting it at a rate that is faster than what it needs to recover.
Global warming and its effects are visible to everyone- increasing temperature, rising sea levels, unpredictable weather, and rapid climate changes.
During this pandemic situation, we are (more fortunately than not) observing yet another environment day. Let us look at how the environmental changes have influenced the pandemic and vice-versa.
Man-made hazards
The increased pollution rates in air, water, and the overall ecosystem we live in have made humans more prone to diseases. The current pandemic is considered by many as a zoonotic disease (a type of disease passed from animals to humans). Humans encroaching on forests and natural habitats of animals have caused an increase in zoonotic diseases. Increased pollution and unhygienic waste disposal have been linked to several disease outbreaks all over the world.
The increase in air pollution has made many humans prone to lung disorders and respiratory diseases. The people who are most affected by the current pandemic are such people. They are left vulnerable due to the very pollution that we have caused. During the pandemic, when factories were shut down and vehicles were not on roads, we saw pollution levels come down in various places. Many parts of the world reported animals and birds returning to the places from where they once disappeared. It shows that there is still hope- that we can still get it all under control.
We have to leave a safe environment for future generations. We inherited this world from our forefathers. It is not ours to use it all up and leave nothing for future generations. We must take active steps towards that.
So, what can we do?
- Minimize food wastage. Make maximum use of the things you buy and cook only as much as you require.
- If you have children, you usually find yourself in a situation where they outgrow their clothes at an astonishing rate. Instead of throwing them away or keeping them in storage, consider donating them to some charity.
- Try to reuse or recycle things- in that order. Try to find alternate uses for things. Or you can even try your hand at turning junk into art. It can prove to be a productive way to spend time in this pandemic lockdown situation and also help the environment at the same time.
- The pandemic has made us spend most of our time cooped up inside our homes. The use of Air conditioning has increased a lot. Try to minimize its use or even switch to alternate means that aren’t as environmentally impactful.
- Stop using single-use plastic. Buy metallic straws, carry personal water bottles, and coffee containers with you whenever possible so that you can opt not to get the plastic ones from stores.
We owe it to our children to leave them this world better than we inherited. But, in this present situation, it doesn’t seem that easy. It’s way past the right time to take action, but we are still not too late. We can still make a change. These steps, however small they might seem, can still count. After all, “little drops of water make a mighty ocean”.
So, try out these tips this environment day. This time around, keep the pledge that you make and promise to yourself that you will make a difference in this world.
We wish you all a happy environment day, let’s all do our part to protect our precious Mother Earth! 🙂
