We are now living in unprecedented times, and during this period of uncertainty, can your children take care of themselves in a situation where you are not with them?
If your answer is NO, then this blog is for you! 🙂
There are many vital skills and lessons a child has to learn at a young age, so they grow up to be capable adults ready to deal with the world. The values can range from honesty, self-discipline to patience, time management, and so on. There are a few important lessons that you can teach your child that would improve the quality of their life.
Let’s take a look at them:
First Aid
It is crucial to not only educate our children on how they can protect their health during this vulnerable period, but it is also important to teach them what to do during medical emergencies. In a health emergency, mere moments can make a big difference. Teaching them how to act in these situations can save lives. Teach them how to treat cuts, scrapes, burns, etc. Make a first aid kit and teach them how they can use each item. Store it in a place where they have easy access.
Swimming
Drowning is one of the leading causes of fatality in children. So, it is a good idea to teach them to swim. Besides this, swimming is an enjoyable activity to indulge. You can start by letting them play in bathtubs or inflatable pools. Once they get used to it, you can enroll them in swimming classes in your community, or you can teach them yourselves.
Cooking
Cooking is an essential skill that everyone needs to learn, regardless of their gender or age. You never know when a situation might arise when you have to cook on your own. So, make sure your children can take care of themselves in such a situation.
Make them participate in your cooking activities and start them off by cutting vegetables or handing ingredients over to you.
Shopping
Take your children along when you go shopping. Discuss with them before leaving home what you are buying and how much money you intend to spend. Show them how you choose items and budget the shopping. Tell them how they can select quality items and how to bargain. Most importantly, teach your children “when to bargain”. Use this opportunity to teach them skills of managing their money, and ensure that they learn the concept of ‘having a budget’ from young. This will definitely come in handy as they grow older and have a longer (and more expensive) list of ‘wants’.
Travelling and Navigation
Make sure your child knows how to use public transport and navigate on their own. Teach them bus and train routes, timings, and directions to frequently visited locations. When you travel with them, let them use the map and guide you.
Take care of the environment
Climate change is one of the biggest threats we are facing in the present world. Even a tiny step in the right direction can go a long way. Teach your children not to litter in public, teach them to plant more trees, and be environmentally responsible citizens. If we are not careful, they might not have a world to grow up to inherit.
To stand up for themselves
Teach them the importance of standing up for themselves. It can help develop self-confidence and decision-making skills in them. Tell them to uphold their ideals and even defend them if necessary. But teach them to do it respectfully. Standing up for oneself doesn’t mean trampling on another person’s opinions and views.
Self-reliance
Teach them to take care of themselves. Even if an adult is not with them, make sure they can complete the essential tasks. But also make sure that they know to reach out for help when in need. Start small. Tell them to make their bed after they get up. Teach them how to get ready and dress up for an occasion and interact with people.
Teach them proper etiquette. Like- table manners, how to talk on the phone, and how to behave in social situations. Teaching it to them can lead to your children being more confident and well behaved.
Road Safety
Road safety rules should be on everyone’s list of skills to teach their children. With the rapid increase of vehicles and the resultant rise in road accidents, you must talk about it with your children.
Teach them to keep to the sidewalk when walking or to the assigned lane. You have to teach them how to read the traffic signals and use the crosswalks. Make them use safety belts and other safety gear so that it becomes a habit to them.
How to handle failure?
In the present world, depression and suicides are increasing. It is mainly due to children not being taught how to handle stress and failure. Teach your children that it is ok to fail and that sincere effort towards something is what actually matters.
When they fail, act as their support. Also, teach them not to let success go to their heads.
Try to instil all these lessons in your child. This can help in their character and mental development and equip them to deal with the world in an effective way. You are the ones who know your child the best. Teach them what they don’t know, but will need to know. Help them grow up to be capable adults that make you proud – use the holidays to help them develop. Happy Holidays! 🙂
