Well, well, well, it’s the last 10 days of the year. School postings for Primary 6 students will be out on 22 December 2020, and there is much anxiety all around. How much do we fear the unknown? Are we ready for new beginnings?
With the allotment into secondary schools being released soon, for many of our kids (as well as their parents) this fear (of the unknown) might turn into a reality. Don’t worry, we will help you alleviate some of your fears. We have got the ideal recipe (or so we think) to help all those concerned parents out there, as well as their children, deal with the eventuality of being posted to a new school.
But I liked it at the old school!
Parents, when did you last hear something like this? Well, be prepared, because in all likelihood you might have to hear a lot of this in the very near future. For students who have to leave the familiar surroundings of their school and get into a new one, there will naturally be periodic comparisons about the previous school they were at. They might miss their teachers, friends, and the general ambiance of the place. So, the first piece of advice to parents – buckle up and be ready to face some stormy waters.
It’s all about being there
Well, what can you do? Can you get your kid back into his old school where everything was familiar and enjoyable to him? Highly unlikely. Sometimes we miss out on the really important parts. Often they are quite simple or straightforward. The most important thing that you as parents need to be doing here is to give kids your reassuring presence. .
Sit with your kids, listen to them, and be empathetic to their feelings and concerns. This would get half the job done. Trust us when we say that presence trumps everything else.
Time to pull out those tales of experience
The key here is to reassure your kids and no one can do it more convincingly than parents themselves. So how do you go about this? Well, this might require a trip down memory lane. We all might have experienced some instance where we were forced to abandon an old setting and enter into a new one. Many parents might have gone through the same pain of having to change schools. The fact is that you went through that and adapted accordingly. This story of yours is exactly what your child needs.
You might as well be the proof that convinces your child that they would do fine at their new school. Parents, you need to tell your kids that it will all be fine. You could even speak to them about instances in their own past where they made changes and thrived despite initial skepticism.
Change is opportunity
We all hear the refrain that change is inevitable. This is a sentence that we normally put across while speaking to someone who is about to make some big change in their lives. But instead of giving our kids this usual dose of philosophy, let’s tell them something different and more impactful – ‘change is an opportunity’.
Think about this – in their new schools, our kids will be able to meet with new individuals and make some new friends. They will be exposed to a great deal of novelty in academics as well as other activities. They will get a chance to improve their emotional and social skills in the process of acclimatizing to the new surroundings. Isn’t that exciting? It’s all in the way you are able to put things across to your kids. Paint them a bright picture about the prospects of change and ensure them that they will be able to keep in touch with their old friends as well.
P.S. A note to parents
To all our loving parents out there, take a deep breath. We know that you can also get as tense as your kids. But that’s ok!
Your kids are growing up and this is big for them. But they will sail through these troubled waters and make it into the bright and sunny ocean of opportunity. You will surely help them get there as well.
So, let us prepare for some lively and exciting changes! 🙂
Moving to a new school!
