Hooray! The PSLEs are over – what next? Yes, now, we shift our focus to our Seniors – those who are taking the GCE ‘O’ Level examinations. For those who have received your preliminary examination results and are worried, we have just the quote for you.
“If the problem can be solved, why worry? If the problem cannot be solved, worrying will do you no good.”
— Shantideva
So, under which category do exams fall?
Definitely challenges that can be solved!
Major exams tend to bring in tremendous amounts of pressure. Any student who is preparing to take the O-Levels now will definitely feel the pressure mounting. Stress is like the add-on of any exam season. But does this always have to be the case? How can you de-stress the exam season? Let’s examine the causes and try to figure out how to deal with this (undesired) add-on.
The perks of having less stress
An adequate amount of stress might not always be bad. But what happens when the stress levels shoot higher than the permissible limits? That would surely mess up your exam preparation, reduce your efficiency and in the worst cases, affect your results negatively. So, feeling less stressed means that you are increasing your chances of scoring better grades. Well, there’s a clear difference between “Oh, I’ve got so much to learn. How am I going to complete studying all this” and “Well, there’s a lot to study. But let me do it in an organised way”. Let’s learn how we can adopt the latter mindset!
Sleep Well, Eat Well
What happens when you are stressed out? You tend to skip meals and have insufficient sleep. And does that do you any good? Definitely not!
So this is rule number one – during the exam season – get your adequate share of sleep (at least 8 hours per day) and have nutritious meals. Don’t skip meals and try to avoid risky food choices (trust me, you don’t want to end up with an upset tummy during the exam season).
Good sleep and healthy food are the fuel for your physical and mental systems, and you definitely need these systems in top efficiency during the exam season. Yes, focusing a bit more on sleep and food may actually help you get you a few extra marks on your papers. But make sure that you don’t overdo these efforts. Stress eating and oversleeping is a strict no-no during the exam season as well.
An exam workout routine
How many lectures have you heard about the benefits of physical exercise? Well, all of them have a point. Spending some time on physical activity should in fact be a general rule of life (not just your GCE ‘O’ level examinations). During the exam season, make sure that you put aside a few minutes every day for exercise. Even a 15-minute routine would do. You could also try things such as yoga or meditation. This ensures that you keep your nerves calm inside the exam hall as well as during the stages of preparation for the O-levels.
Have someone to speak to
Now, this is an area where parents can chip in. Most people need company when they are going through challenging situations. This rule applies to kids who are taking their O-levels as well. After daily bouts of studying, your kids might need ‘someone’ to speak to, to share their concerns or simply to relax. What can parents do here? Well, they can be those ‘someone-s’. Listen more to your children during these exam days, make more time for them and do all you can to reassure them. Almost every student who is seriously preparing for the exams goes through at least a few moments of freaking out. So parents, be there for your kids when these moments happen.
It’s not Zero-fun time
We all need a bit of leisure, no matter what the situation is. So exam seasons are not necessarily reasons to ban breaks. You should reward yourself with adequate break time. Studying 24×7 can be a lot more detrimental than productive if you do not sprinkle in a few moments to rest or have fun. Yes, you can spend some time on your screens, watching your favourite videos or playing some games. You could even go out for a walk once in a while or call up a friend on the phone.
The O-levels are near, but that doesn’t mean that you have to freak out. Kids, remember that you have put in the necessary hard work. The O-levels are going to be challenging, but it’s a challenge that you are definitely capable of overcoming. Along with your dedicated preparation, spend some time to calm your nerves before your exams and watch how it helps you to score like never before. All the best! 🙂
