What do you do when you feel sad? What do you do when you feel like you need a break? Have we all felt like that since the start of the school term on 02 June 2020? Yes, I think we can all agree that we need some time-out!
Talking about time-out, what do we do when we need that short bout of time to rest and recharge? That’s right! Think rest, think fun, think hobby! Having a hobby is really important in life. Hobbies can be the right remedy for a variety of situations. They can offer us solace during sadness, give us a perfect break from the monotony and keep us preoccupied when there is nothing else to do.
But do we realise all these virtues of having hobbies? Do we spend adequate time on them?
What’s the best hobby?
Is there even such a thing as the ‘best hobby’? All of us have different preferences and interests and honestly, all that matters is that your hobby should bring in added benefits, shouldn’t it? Wait, what about money? Is that an important factor as well? Some people think that they should pick hobbies that can bring them some extra money. Do you agree?
Yes, it is good to have a hobby that can bring in added benefits. It will definitely be great if you can monetise your hobby. It is also good to take a look at the hobbies of successful people. But more importantly, a hobby is a highly personal affair. You should be doing what you love to do. Pick a hobby that you find amusing, one that you enjoy doing, one that helps you relax and feel alive. It can be anything from painting your toenails to skydiving.
What does a hobby do?
We are all rushing through our lives, moving from one deadline to another. Schoolwork, work assignments, planning new financial investments – the list of tasks on our plates just increase with each passing day. We work hard, try dedicatedly to keep the deadlines and end up stressing ourselves out quite often. Life often turns monotonous. This is where hobbies come in
Giving us breathers
A hobby gives you the chance to escape from your cycle of assignments and commitments. It’s like a short trip to Disneyland. You get to relax and do something that you love to do, instead of doing the stuff that you may be doing out of compulsion at work or school. How does this help? It helps you vent out your stress in a healthy manner. It leaves you calm and refreshed.
Making us more productive
Spending time on a hobby actually makes you more productive. But with some hobbies, don’t we end up simply wasting time which could have been used for work? No. Whatever your hobby might be, it gives your mind refreshment. Too much work makes us dull. As we keep piling on the work hours, we get lethargic and our productivity or efficiency drops. A hobby is like plugging you in for charging. It refreshes your mind and gives you the strength to get back to work at full efficiency.
Getting in touch with ourselves
Think that we are feeling a little less creative these days with Covid-19 harbouring around and locking us indoors? Hobbies bring out the creative side in us. They help us understand ourselves better and help us sync with nature. These effects can enhance our self-confidence as well.
Some hobby ideas for children
Parents can put forth before kids a few options that are worthwhile pursuing.
First and foremost is the hobby of reading. Make full use of the library to borrow the best books that can usher in a positive wave in the minds of our young ones.
Watching movies is another good option. The Oscar Award-winning director Bong Joon-Ho said, “once you’ve overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films”. There is a ton of quality cinema from around the globe that can touch you and help you grow.
Gardening or learning a musical instrument are also some very good options.
But as we mentioned earlier, weigh in your child’s natural preferences as well and encourage exploration to find out what it is that your child truly enjoys.
In our fast-paced lives, let us not forget the invaluable nature of hobbies. Every now and then, spend some time on your hobby and experience how wonderful your life will turn out to be! 😊
‘To be happy in life, develop at least four hobbies: one to bring you money, one to keep you healthy, one to bring you joy, and one to bring you peace.’ – Stan Jacobs
