A Cheat Sheet To Learning Kindness

These are hashtags you would have encountered more frequently in the last few months. We’ve been witnessing an increased crime rate in recent times. Especially during this Covid-19 period, many people are unemployed, some are feeling distressed over being confined to their homes. But, do you really know why people indulge in such criminal activities? It is mainly because they haven’t been taught about the importance of love and kindness, or they weren’t shown any sort of kindness.
How much do we invest in education?
Parents these days spend a great deal to make sure that their children are equipped with the best skills. They invest a lot of time into the same as well, all to make sure that their kids have fruitful lives.
But what if we are missing out on one major ingredient? What if this ingredient can be taught without investing a truckload of money for it?
Yes, we are speaking about kindness.
Is it really important to be kind?
How many times have you been really hurt by someone else’s behaviour? How many times have you felt in need of help but never received it?
Well, on such occasions we wish for people to be kind to us. Why can’t someone show us kindness? This is what we think.
This makes it quite evident why kindness is important. We all need it. Therefore we need to be able to be sympathetic towards others and help them out with words, actions or support. Here are a few tips to teach yourself to be kind.
Put yourself in someone else’s shoes
The best way to teach children kindness is to encourage them to think from the point of view of those who are in need of kindness. If you are volunteering to help a charity and want your child to pitch in as well, speak to her about it. Tell her about the people who would be helped with the act. Speak in detail about the hardships that those people are facing.
Often, this approach of teaching kindness can be mastered within the household. Imagine that you come home from work all tired but your child wants you to play with her. If you deny, then your child might get disappointed and even turn out to be angry with you. This is a great opportunity to teach her to be kind. During such situations or even a little while after them, sit your child down and speak to her about how exhausted you were feeling when you came back from work. Make her feel and understand your point of view. This will help her to be kinder next time and would also serve as a template for further behaviour.
Be kind to yourself
But wait, before you learn to be kind towards others, there is something else that we should learn – being kind to ourselves.
We are all humans. And what is one of the common characteristics of humans? We all mess up. Sometimes we make mistakes or end up in situations where we end up blaming ourselves.
But, these instances should not rule our lives. We must be able to teach ourselves to be kind and forgive ourselves. Only if we do this we will be able to be kind to others.
Get some positive content
Expose yourself to positive movies, books and other content. A positive outlook helps make your mind fertile for values such as kindness and sharing. In the case of children, parents can help out here immensely by always sharing positive thoughts with them.
Put the safeguards in place
Can you meditate for kindness?
What about some “Kindness meditation”? Is there actually a thing like that? Well, yes there is.
The more accurate term for it is “Loving Kindness Meditation”. This technique, which is rooted in ancient tradition makes use of silence and chants to develop a sense of inner peace and help us channel our energies towards more love, compassion and kindness.
It doesn’t take much to be kind. But the happiness that it brings about in our lives, as well as those of others, is something that no amount of riches can buy. Let’s focus on being more kind. Let’s start with small steps and do our share. In the current season of Covid-19, our world demands a lot of kindness and let us all make sure that we spread love and kindness wherever we go!
“Kindness can become its own motive. We are made kind by being kind.” – Eric Hoffer
