Exploring The Online Space Under Child Supervision
“Children learn from their parents.”
“Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.”
We are all too familiar with such statements. But recent developments are pulling us in another direction. Has the time come when parents can start learning a lot of stuff from their kids? The recent trends do suggest so!
Gen Z and their virtual skills
Gen Z knows a lot more than we give them credit for. How many of today’s young parents have not had to pull up their kids at least once for their smartphone usage? Yes, Gen Z spends a lot of time online. But there’s another side to this as well. Have we given thought to that?
Today’s kids are in reality, more adapted to life in the tech-powered modern world that we live in. They are on average a lot more at ease with the use of modern technology than their parents. From using social media platforms to accessing online services via a plethora of apps, the kids have got it all covered. They are always updated on the latest trends as well. They don’t watch news channels, but they get all the updates at their fingertips at lightning speed.
What does this mean?
Many parents complain that they are not able to spend adequate quality time with their kids as the latter is always busy with gadgets. Another common issue faced by many parents is a lack of understanding of the virtual space. What if both these issues could be resolved through one stroke of genius?
All you have to do is to let your kids be in charge. Now, don’t look at us as if we are crazy. Yes, we mean it. Let your kids be in charge of guiding you with how to make full use of your gadgets, that is. Now, this doesn’t mean that kids today know better than their parents. But what we are suggesting is a mere recognition of the fact that kids today are indeed better than their parents in a number of things, and these refer specifically to using their technological gadgets.
Learning the social media basics
During the circuit breaker period, there have been many TikTok videos of kids with their parents. It is not uncommon to find kids getting their parents online and being a part of various social media platforms. They tutor them about the various functionalities on Facebook, the added features on Instagram, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
This is indeed an opportunity for parents. It’s time to admit that we live in a social media-dependent world where everyone needs to know at least a bare minimum about the virtual space. The good thing for most parents is that they don’t have to go outside in search of tutors.
Some quality online time together
If in the days gone by people bonded over coffee or vacations, today parents can bond with their kids with some quality online time. Does that sound a bit oxymoronic? Well, the times have indeed changed.
Parents are encouraged to indulge in productive activities such as gardening, working out, etc along with their kids. This is supposed to lead to better bonding in addition to getting your children to pick up a new skill. Getting your kid to help you with some online basics is like doing any fun activity together. The only difference is that you are the one picking up the skill with your kid being the guide.
Making a video together, posing for Instagram pics, learning how to use a new app – these are all ways in which parents can pick up new social media skills while at the same time enjoy some quality time with their kids.
In addition, putting kids in the driver’s seat is going to give them a boost of self-confidence and making them feel more at ease with their parents. Now that schools are reopening next week, what better time than now to make use of the last few days of the school holidays to spend this extra time together? For better parent-child relationships as well as an enhanced realization of our individual capabilities, let us all seek to utilize the online space more effectively, and create those memories while we can! 🙂
