The First Ride
The first hot air balloon took off — driven by a combination of hot air and helium—in 1783 in Paris, flying a sheep, a rooster, and a duck in an inaugural flight over King Louis the sixteenth’s head. It was the first human-devised form of flight. Today, hot air balloons may have been replaced in practicality by airplanes. However, the unforgettable experience of slowly rising through the air remains hugely compelling for travelers around the world. Hot air balloons still have a charm that you just can’t get on airplanes.
So while hot air balloons may not be a publicly available form of transport, they are by no means gone. Many popular tourist destinations have begun regular balloon trips, giving people unparalleled views of some of the world’s most iconic landmarks. Needless to say, trips like these have only “ballooned” in popularity!
So where are the world’s best balloon rides?
The Luxurious One
The most luxurious one can be found at Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. An hour’s journey, almost 4000 feet off the ground, takes passengers over the desert. Floating above sand dunes and oases, you have a chance to catch a glimpse of camels, gazelles, and even the iconic Arabian oryx. Even if you don’t see anything, the majestic landscape of sand and sky is enough to uplift anyone’s heart.
The Western World
For a totally different ballooning experience, head to the USA. Every October, the ultimate balloon congregation can be found in the American Midwest. Over 100 balloons take to the air at once as part of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. With concerts and fireworks as well as the mass balloon launches day and night, it’s definitely the hottest place to be that time of year in New Mexico!
The Wildlife Experience
A more wildlife-centered trip can be found on the Maasai Mara. Using low-noise burner hot air balloons, you can float undetected over the largest mammal migration in the world, following the herds of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and antelope. If you’re lucky, you might even see a hunt from the air!
Amazing Others
Many other famous balloon rides explore history. At the Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia—the largest religious monument in the world—you can go on an short balloon ride for 10 minutes, with the balloons tethered to the ground for nervous first-timers. In Luxor, Egypt, also known as the world’s greatest open air museum, you can sail over the amazing giant of Great Hypostyle Hall and the giant statues of the Colossi of Memnon!
In Bagan, Myanmar, you can travel from the 9th to the 13th century during your flight. As the capital of the First Burmese Empire—the “gilded city”—you can see the thousands of temples, stupas, and pagodas that have been accumulated through dynasties, including the famous sparkling gold spires of the Ananda temple. In Cappadocia, Turkey, you can visit the volcanic rock formations. Experienced guides guide the baskets into valleys for closer views of the fairy chimney rock structures and temples.
If you have a streak of adventure, a hot air balloon can provide a new view on things. Far above, you can understand the world on a scale you just don’t get on the ground. You get off the balloon with a new understanding of our planet and its brilliant, complex, immense beauty.
