“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” – Confucius, the founder of Confucianism. Regardless of its origin, the words hold significance even today because almost everyone faces confusion while choosing a job. How do people go about this considerably important life decision? What are the factors that need to be considered? What deserves more priority – passion or practicality? Let us try to shed some light on these matters.
What happened in the previous generations?
Has the search for jobs undergone changes over the years? It certainly has. Until a few years or decades ago people were much more willing to go in for high paying jobs even when working conditions were highly demanding and inflexible. Long chains of command were easily adhered to and people worked hard individually. There was less reliance on technology as well. Considered to be more risk-averse, desk-bound and manufacturing jobs were preferred as opposed to high-risk ventures such as starting a business.
How things have changed?
Things have changed by a great deal today. The millennials have a totally different view of the workplace. The changes are reflected both in their aspirations as well as their skill sets. They have a better grasp on technology and seek to maximize the utilization of this at the workplace.
Flexibility – what the younger generation cherishes
People want more flexibility at the workplace. Increasingly we find youngsters choosing jobs that do not compel them to have fixed working hours. They wish to work when they are in the mood to do so. At times this becomes more important than the remuneration that they get from the job. Jobs with the ‘work from home’ options are being sought after. and number of freelancers is at an all-time high.
The cult of startups
The courage to go out and start a business of your own is more prominent among youngsters today. We find a large number of youngsters taking to entrepreneurship and opting to be job creators instead of being job seekers. This is leading to a good deal of innovation across fields. One of the reasons behind this is the urge to be independent at work and to be one’s own boss.
A social blend
The youngsters of today have grown up in a society that is more aware of environmental concerns and humanitarian issues across the globe. As such, they wish to do something that while getting them money, would also give them the opportunity to contribute positively towards combating the problems that the world faces today.
How should you make a choice?
So what should you keep in mind while trying to choose a job? First of all, make a list of your priorities. Do you want to have a certain amount of satisfaction in your job? Or is the money all that counts so long as you are doing something decent? Identifying this is paramount.
Then, identify your abilities or interests. Are you exceptionally good at something? Or is there something that you’ve always wanted to do in life?
Try to interact with people in the industries that you wish to try for jobs. This will give you a better understanding of the ground realities.
You might have some passion. Make sure that you are completely aware of the pros and cons of pursuing it before you make a final decision about making a career out of it.
It’s your decision
At the end of the day, choosing a job is your decision. It is something that you will have to live with for a good part of your life. Get advice from others, but remember that the final decision should be made by you yourself. The former US President, Barak Obama, once said, “Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.” The world is full of opportunities. You only have to take the step out and explore. Put a bit of time and thought into figuring out the career path that you wish to follow. Don’t worry, most people get confused in the process of career discovery. Be patient, give it time, you will surely find your answer. All the best! 🙂
