No two people are alike, are they? There are differences between people in the way that they do things. This is true across age groups. When it comes to the act of learning as well, we find a number of differences in style. Do we as parents these days give a thought to this? Do you know what your child’s learning style is? Is it important that you know what your child’s learning style is?
Getting a clear idea
Let us take the example of a sport such as lawn tennis. The Grand Slams (major tournaments) in this sport is played across different surfaces. Some are played on clay and other on grass. Based on the surface conditions players modify their strategies and approach so as to emerge victoriously. A good acquaintance with the surface conditions is thus pivotal to success.
In a similar manner, getting to know your child’s learning style is important for his academic success. Once you have proper knowledge about his style you will be able to chart suitable strategies and study plans. What are the benefits of this? It helps you save a lot of time both for yourself as well as your child. Academic performance will also be improved. Thus, the overall efficiency of learning can be increased.
Exploring the different learning styles!
The main learning styles are visual, auditory and reading/writing. It is likely that your child displays a combination of these styles. But there is usually one style which is favoured more by him. So how do you figure it out? This is one of the main concerns that can pop up. The clues to finding this out are given by the children themselves.
Observation and Testing
One of the options here is to observe your child and the way he goes about his subjects at school. Watch him while he is at the study table and find out how much of time he spends to cover different portions of the syllabus. Watch him outside of his study time as well. Notice his habits and preferences. Look for the preferences in the form of reading, writing, singing and other capabilities within your kids. You can also test your kids for such abilities. A useful way would be to try and get your child to learn a few topics with different learning styles – visual, auditory, kinaesthetic and reading/writing.
Matching the clues
If your child displays an interest in singing or humming all the time, then he is in all likelihood an auditory learner. This means that you should advise him to read aloud or listen to audio lectures during study time. If your child is good with remembering directions and faces, then she might be more of a visual learner. Knowing this lets you to more deliberately incorporate more visuals and images in her learning process. Kinaesthetic learners show proficiency in remembering things once they get some hands-on experience. For them, more activity means better learning. Some display better results while reading in solitude or after writing down stuff. As parents, we should be able to figure out this and make sure our children make the most of their desired learning style.
Finding out your child’s learning style helps you fine-tune study plans and make the most out of study time. It thus helps bring out the best in your children. With a bit of observation, parents will be able to find out the learning style of their children with ease. So then waste no time and zero-in on your child’s style of learning. Remember, learning can be fun, only if it is to your child’s learning style! 😊
