Failure is a part of life just as much as success is, isn’t it? All of us have heard this dictum in some form or the other. Yet at the end of the day when failure strikes, a good number of us are left completely devastated and unable to get past it. The story of exam failures is one of the most common ones in this regard. A lot of us parents might still be puzzled about helping our kids deal with and overcome their exam failures. Here are some things that you can do to keep things under control.
Prepare before the results are out
Your kid would have a fair idea about what his results might look like even before they are published. If he knows that he has performed badly then help him acknowledge and come to terms with the reasons as well as the possible consequences of this even before the results are out. When your kid is prepared for the worst, the results will not be a rude shock to your child then and he would already have gained the strength of mind to look past them.
What do you do when your kid feels that he has performed well and is expecting high marks? In such scenarios, it is best to ensure that your child does not get his hopes high because even if he thinks that he did everything right the results might have another story to tell. Getting your hopes up high can leave you totally unprepared to deal with a possible failure.
Therefore, whatever the case may be, we find that helping your kid prepare for the results is something that parents have to devote a bit of attention to.
Know it when your criticism becomes unnecessary
Have you ever fared badly at any of your exams during your days at school or college due to faults of your own? Most of us have done so at least on a few occasions. So, we all should know that messing things up is a humane attribute.
Does this mean that your kids should be allowed to go without a reprimand? Well, you should let them know how you feel and help them understand their flaws. As parents, you are responsible to give criticism when it is due. But there is no point of continuing with this incessantly even after your kid is made adequately aware of his misdeeds. You should realise that he needs support to deal with his exam failure and refrain from overburdening him with excessive criticism.
The glass is half full
Teach your child to see that there is something positive in everything. Even when it comes to the failure that he has just faced show him that he can find positive elements in it. For example, he can use these failures as learning curves if he decides to do so instead of brooding over them. These experiences should be used to teach children qualities that would make them better equipped to deal with scenarios of failure in the future.
In reality, failure offers more scope for learning than success. A failure helps one stay rooted to the ground, prevents complacency and opens up an opportunity to review yourself. All this helps you to improve on your qualities and become a better individual. Failures in exams are no different. Own up to them, realise where you erred but never let the failures destroy you. Parents need to put in a little effort to ensure that their kids learn the vital life skill of dealing with failure. But then “Prevention is better than cure”, and you know what helps avoid failures?
