When the curtains are drawn on the exam season, it takes with it a number of problems that haunted our households during the run-up to the examination. But is it always peace and calmness that follows all this? Not necessarily.
With the end of the exams, there is also a good chance that we end up facing some new problems. One of the most common among these is a child who is upset about her performance. Is this familiar territory for you? Well, this is a really testing situation and parents, as always, need to be prepared to handle such a predicament.
Stay Aware!
Now, this might sound a bit silly to some people, but the first step is to gauge the mood that your child is in. If I were to tell you that some parents might not even realise it when their child is upset about things, would you believe me? This can happen. So, as parents your first step is to ensure that you spend time with your kids especially after the exams so that you can get a good idea about their frame of mind.
Different Kids. Different Scenarios.
Get your child to speak out to you about her problem. Now there may be differences here on an individual basis. Sometimes your kid might not have prepared adequately for the examination. In this case, your job is relatively easy because you will able to convince her about the cause of her predicament – lack of preparation or laziness. Then all you have to make sure is that she accepts the facts in a healthy manner and takes a mental commitment to do better the next time around.
But there is also the possibility that your child put in a lot of dedicated preparation for the examination and still feels upset about her performance. This is a more challenging situation as a parent. What do you do? You need to spend some time with her and tread with care here. Make her understand that such things (failures) are a part of life and one exam cannot be used to evaluate a person. Convert the defeatism that has gotten hold of your kid and teach her to use it as a motivation to better her performance and put in more hours. But most importantly tell your kid that you are proud of her for the hard work that she put in. This validation from your part is the best medicine.
Making Peace with the Past
Over the course of this article, we have discussed how your kid being upset over her exam performance is a serious problem. But there is another angle to this. Did you ever think that this situation can be converted into a situation of great utility? Well, you can teach your kids some important life lessons here and train them for what lies ahead in their lives.
Teach them to stop worrying about things of the past, over which they can have no control. Ensure that they learn to look forward towards the future and work for that instead of brooding over the mistakes they made or the ill-fate they were subjected to.
You can try to take your child’s mind off the sad thoughts by creating distractions through activities both in-home as well as outside. A trip, movie or some playtime can be good choices. But the most important thing is that you actually spend some time with her. What your kid needs most is some human presence, someone who can understand them and guide them out of their sad situation. Be that person! 😊
