Our children might hear about the World Wars and the History of Singapore in their classrooms. They might learn about the different seasons and how plants help in maintaining the oxygen level in the atmosphere. Within the four walls of their classrooms they are told about different scientific theories. But how successful is all this in the absence of practical elements?
Practical skills are in high demand in the 21st-century workforce. In addition to this, these skills also help students to understand things in a better manner as well. Aren’t these reasons enough to set about building measures that can enhance one’s practical knowledge?
Language and Communication at the Primary Level
A lot of practical knowledge can be imparted into school-going students. In the junior classes, we should stress more on building communication and language abilities. This includes an active effort to build a good vocabulary. We should concentrate on removing elements such as stage fright. Give students topics to prepare and give a speech on. Distribute newspapers and ask them to read a news article that interests them and narrate it in their own words to the entire class. What this does is that it helps them build their language and also takes off their stage fear.
How does all this help better your child’s understanding?
Well, better communication and language skills would help increase the speed with which your child can read as well as the pace of understanding what she has read. In addition to this, some simple experiments can also be done in class related to the concepts which are being taught.
More practical courses in the secondary stage
At secondary school and higher levels, more practical elements should be added. Activities such as gardening and attending social functions can enhance the understanding about what our students are learning in class as well as instil in them life skills such as discipline, teamwork and social responsibility. Students should be encouraged in building working models or static models of things related to what they learn. This will give them an in-depth understanding.
Field trips and industrial visits should be used to give students hands-on experience. When they see in action the things that they learn about, the knowledge stays with them for a long time.
Parents can pitch in as well
Education is a holistic process and is not restricted to the confines of the classroom. Parents should also be active participants in the educational process of their children. But how can you help your kids improve their practical knowledge? Alright, this might sound surprising, but you can actually help by giving your kids insights into what is happening in the household. Show them how you pay off your bills, fill out a cheque, do your taxes or apply for a driver’s license. All this would give a better understanding of how things work in the society around them. These activities would make them more independent and empowered.
You could also help your kids start a small yard in the backyard, teach them how to make minor repairs on their bikes and so on. While taking a drive with the kids you can tell them about one or two driving rules and explain the rationale behind them.
We need a blend
So, does this mean that practical knowledge trumps theoretical know-how? Absolutely not. We need both bookish knowledge as well as practical skills. Without the textual knowledge, we would never be able to gain proper practical skills and without practical knowledge, there is no point in digesting truckloads of books. A holistic pattern of education emphasises on the blend of both elements. And you know what adds more value to theoretical lessons? Videos! Topics that are tough to follow when learning theory can be understood much easily with videos.
Practical knowledge can enhance the learning experience and increase the clarity of concepts. We need to make the most out of this and in the process help our kids become better equipped to deal with present-day realities.
