How does it feel when the exams are just a few days or hours away? What is the situation at your home when the clock ticks down to your child’s exams? Needless to say, these periods have the highest potential for panic, frenzied revision and utter chaos. Last-minute revision is something that people tend to disagree upon. Some people simply do not believe in the concept and vouch for keeping away the books and staying calm during the last minutes. But the fact remains that there can be a lot of value in revision just before exams.
How does last-minute revision help us?
When our kids go through the most relevant information just before the exams it stays fresh in their minds and thus can be recalled with greater ease. The information would be more deeply entrenched in their minds as well. Any amount of revision is an added asset. It always helps you to better your understanding of the subject.
Do not panic
To make last-minute revision effective, we have to first make sure that our kids are in the right frame of mind. Panicking and stressing yourself out would be disastrous and render any sort of revision ineffective. So, the first step is to revise with a calm mind. Speak some words of encouragement to your kids. Something on the lines of, “Great, you have covered all the relevant portions. Now you just have to go through everything once more to stay on top”, would be good. Remind your child that he has prepared well enough.
Recollecting from titles
Make your kid look at the list of the important topics which are part of the syllabus. Make him read out each topic and map in his mind everything that he studied about it. Make him narrate it to you. This exercise of recollection can help him access the information more easily when he is in the exam hall and is less time consuming as well. It would also give you an idea about any major concerns that you should address before your kid takes the tests.
Perfecting what you know
Do you insist on teaching your kid some topic that he had initially left out? During the last few hours, many people stress on covering topics which they have not learned. This can be counterproductive with your kids as they might not be able to quickly pick up the unfamiliar topics. Instead of devoting time for this we can make sure that our kids revise all the things that they have already learned in a proper way. This can give you more successful outcomes.
Pulling out your own notes or skimming
While we follow textbooks and other comprehensive material for the learning process when it comes to revision in general and last-minute revision in particular, it is better if one uses short notes. It would be great if your kid has some of his/ her own short notes or points prepared in advance. If not, then he/ she can opt for breezing past the lessons in your textbooks by reading only the highlighted lines and words.
