The past few decades have witnessed a digital revolution. Every aspect of our lives has been influenced by it. The field of education is no exception. Remember the days when we had to labour at libraries to find the right books for our academic needs? Well, we have come a long way since then and now if you want to find any information, all you need is a mobile or laptop and an active internet connection. Google has turned out to be the library of modern-day people. On similar lines, there are several online training institutes springing up all around the world, but how are parents reacting to these changes? Are we more sceptical than welcoming or is it the other way round?
The Major Concern over gadget use
The primary concern for parents with regard to online learning is the possibility of misuse of screen time for non-academic purposes. Children are already spending a lot of time on gadgets and many parents fear that their kids might end up addicted to the screens. But does this group form the majority? So, what we did is we checked with a few of the parents of children who took up our PSLE tuition online classes.
Interaction with Parents and our Discoveries
88tuition creates a good amount of online educational content to enhance the learning process of children. Over the course of our activities, we have been able to interact with a number of parents. Guess what we found out? Let’s sum up with what two parents had to say.
Fenny Soh is a young mother with whom we had the pleasure to interact. This is what she had to say. “My daughter is going to take the PSLE this year. I used to spend a lot of time with her, helping her with school. Over the past few months, I have been finding it tough to put in as many hours for her as I had recently been promoted at work. My job started demanding more from me and I was having trouble making sure that it didn’t hurt Hue’s studies. That is when I heard about 88tuition and its online PSLE tuition classes. Soon enough I got Hue enrolled for the tuition. Today I feel that it was a great decision. She has been preparing efficiently with the help of the tuition. Everything happens online and I didn’t have to worry about getting my child to classes. She could learn at her own convenience within our home and I could check on her preparation whenever I got time. Yes, I got to accept the fact it was initially difficult for me to get her to learn the subjects and take the online assessments on time. But that struggle lasted just a week and soon she started to develop interest over the online learning experience.”
Elicia Lee is a working mom who faced similar concerns. “I always found it difficult to make enough time for Jimmy. This year I knew that things had to be taken more seriously as he would be appearing for the PSLE. Jimmy used to spend a lot of time glued to gadgets and so we placed restrictions on his screen time. So, when a friend recommended 88tuition’s online courses I was a bit doubtful. I didn’t know if it would be the right choice considering my son’s love for gadgets. But all those fears were allayed once he started taking the tuition. Jimmy could understand concepts more clearly. I could monitor his progress and also found it that he started feeling a sort of liking towards his subjects. There were a few instances where he didn’t perform well in mathematics assessment and after having checked his score online, I directly got in touch with his online tutor. I understood that he was facing difficulties in learning a few mathematical concepts. So, I replayed the session and sat next to him. This time around he got a better idea of the concepts and he retook the assessment and scored well. One main advantage of this online learning thing is that the sessions are recorded and we can replay it whenever needed. This comes in really handy especially before the exams my kid just needs to check the videos again.”
These two parents are representative of the entire set of parents that we interacted with. What does this say? It definitely leads us to believe that parents are in fact positive about the whole concept of online learning. Contrary to suspicions, online learning seems to be helping parents to monitor the learning process in a more efficient manner.
Love it or hate it, it’s here to stay
Technology is undergoing rapid changes and it has influenced almost all industries, and the education industry hasn’t been left alone. Online tuition and learning are a clear reflection of the advancements in the field of education. In fact, online education is a part of our future. Keeping our kids away from it would only serve to limit their capabilities. As parents, we should understand this first and ensure that our kids are able to use online tools for learning in an efficient and responsible manner.
