It’s a really competitive world out there. Things work on the motto of ‘perform or perish’. How often does it all get to you at work or home? Stress is something that can derail our routines, diminish our results and make us depressed with our lives. But one thing that we may fail to recognise is that our children are at the risk of getting stressed out as well. School and social relationships can get tough for them. At the end of the day, they are as prone to the ill effects of stress as any mature adult. How do we help them deal with it?
Be their ‘go-to-guys’
De-stressing can be effectively done by parents. Make sure that your kid is able to approach you for anything. More importantly, pay attention to your kid and spot the symptoms of a stressed-out young mind before it gets out of hand. The home is the best place to deal with stress and parents are the best counsellors.
Sleep-away the stress
A good amount of sleep is a prerequisite to the emotional and physical well-being of any individual. Sleep is all the more important for your kid. A shortfall in sleep can result in higher levels of stress. May sure that your teenagers get 8-10 hours of sleep and kids who are not yet in their teenage to get at least 9-11 hours of sleep. Teach them about the importance of sleep and see to it that they never compromise on their sleeping hours.
Add some play and fun
Your child’s life is not all about school and studies. There should be ample room for fun. All work and no fun makes a child a dull person. A bit of fun inserted into your kid’s routine can act as a vent to the stress accumulated as part of the school and other things. So, make sure your kids spend a good amount of time at play, reading or doing something that they love.
The horror of failure
The glooming prospect of failure is what provides fertile ground for stress. Do you put a lot of expectations on your child’s shoulders? Maybe you should go easy on him/her a bit. A lesser burden of expectations can serve to lessen the amount of stress. Teach your kids that it is ok to fail and that you are always going to be there for them. At the same time teach them to be positive and trust their capabilities. Does that sound a bit contradictory? To put it simply, “hope for the best and prepare for the worst”.
Stress is a reality even for your kids. Teach them how to manage it. Be by their side and help them in managing their stress in a healthy manner. There is a lot that we can do as parents in this respect. Give your kids a stress-free and happier life. The less the stress, the better will be the results.
