There are more than 7.5 billion people in the world today. But did you know that among the entire population of the world, 1.8 billion are in the age group 10 – 24 years? The world is home to a large number of youth. Did you know that this is the largest population of youth to ever inhabit the earth at a given time? A large youth population definitely has a lot of positive prospects associated with it. Youth is the most beautiful age of human life. Therefore, it is only fitting that we devote a day to celebrate this great phase of our lives.
Since 2000
In 1999 the United Nations General Assembly endorsed a resolution to celebrate the 12th of August every year as International Youth Day. The first International Youth Day was thus celebrated on 12th August 2000. Every year the celebrations have a specific theme related to youth. The day is a celebration of youth and offers a platform to highlight and discuss the key issues and challenges that are present before youngsters. Various workshops, concerts and seminars are held across the globe with active participation from government bodies, non-governmental organisations, youth organisations and so on.
What about this year?
So, what’s the theme this year? ‘Transforming education’ is the theme of this year’s International Youth Day. Education is a vital ingredient for a good quality life. While we are blessed with top quality educational facilities, the same is not true for the youth across the globe. Global educational facilities need to be transformed so as to increase inclusiveness and promote continued learning. No one should be left out. Quality education should be seen as an inalienable natural right. It is to throw light on this growing concern that such a theme has been chosen for this year’s celebrations. A lot is already being done by many governments and other organisations in this regard. It is reassuring to know that a number of youths organisations are also at the forefront of these initiatives. But the battle is nowhere close to getting over anytime soon.
The heirs to the world
The youth of today are the citizens of tomorrow. In a few years’ time, the controls of this world will come into their hands. As such it becomes important to ensure that our youngsters get a proper formation. They need to imbibe the necessary values and skills to create a better world. Technology has brought in a number of boons, but it has also led to many discouraging tendencies in the lives of our youth. There is an increased prevalence of self-imposed isolation and idleness. But the picture is not all gloomy. Last year we saw 15-year old Greta Thunberg grab global attention for speaking up to global leaders against the slow progress made in climate change talks. A few years back the young Malala Yousafzai gained fame while championing the cause of education for girls. These examples point towards the vast potential that our youth are sleeping on. It is time to awaken from the slumber and start working on building and bettering the world.
The largest population of youth are set to inherit a world with a number of challenges ranging from the relatively new factor of climate change to the perennial woe of inequality. The challenges are many, but today’s youth possess the best resources to overcome these hurdles. This year, as we celebrate the International Youth Day let us remember that our youth have the potential and that we only have to help them discover it. Happy Youth Day*!
*Singapore celebrates Youth Day on 7 July 2019 this year. The following Monday (8 July 2019) is a scheduled school holiday.
