Holidays are the time when we as parents tend to turn a bit lenient. That is not something bad. But where does one draw the line? A common sight during the holidays is that of our kids sleeping in for way longer than they do during school days. They have their excuse for it – they don’t have to wake up early since there is no need to get ready for school. As parents, we tend to buy this excuse and being sympathetic to their cause let our kids get a few extra hours of sleep. This is something that requires deeper probing. Let us delve into this matter a bit deep.
How much sleep is good sleep?
Being aware of the required sleeping hours is a good way to start. Expert advice prescribes that children aged between 6-13 should ideally get 9-12 hours of sleep and teenagers in the age group 14-17 must get 8-10 hours of sleep. If your child is getting the prescribed amounts of sleep, then don’t worry. If not try to make suitable adjustments at the earliest. Now coming to our point regarding the holidays. First of all, check how many hours your child is sleeping on holidays. If this is in excess of the ideal sleeping limit, then we might have a problem in our hands. Sleeping in during the holidays can also turn into a problem when school restarts. The sudden change that would be required in sleeping hours can become a really tedious task.
How to get your kid to ditch sleeping in?
What about making it a rule for your kid that he/she has to wake up early even during the holidays? It is better to avoid such hard and fast rules in such matters. While they may achieve the desired ends in the short term, the long-term results of such rules can turn out to be disastrous. So, what is the strategy to be followed here? Some attractive physical activity would be a good idea. Maybe you can get your kid a bike and go out for morning rides with him/her. If your kid doesn’t know how to ride a bike, then you can use the holiday mornings to teach your kid how to ride. Sports is always a good choice. A game of football or badminton in the morning can turn out to be something that your child could look forward to. You can also cut out the extra hours of sleep and teach your kid how to make a good breakfast. The important thing here is to pick an activity which your child is interested in and make sure they spend their early morning hours doing that on a routine basis.
Before we sum up, there is another important point to note. Some people tend to be more active during the night. Your kid might be engaging in something productive late into the night. As a result, he might wake up a bit late in the morning. Don’t panic. If your kid performs better at night, then just let it be and try to channelise his energy towards productive goals. The holidays are a time to relax. But too much sleep is as dangerous as too little sleep. So, let your kid spend his time more productively this holiday season and get out of bed as usual.
