‘HOMEWORK’… This is a word that haunts almost every parent. A kid’s homework turns into a source of immense anxiety for parents. But all this can be easily avoided. Let’s see how it is done in 5 easy steps.
Understanding your child’s needs
Your child is an individual with her own tastes and skills. For some children, homework is never challenging and is at times hopelessly boring. To others, it is an unbearable burden. Well, what do you do as a responsible parent? First of all, figure out what sort of a learner your child is. If the homework is unchallenging for them, praise them for their good work and encourage perfection in their scores, so that they feel more challenged when doing their homework. If your child is struggling with the homework then don’t panic. She is not meant to be an Einstein in primary school nor is every kid supposed to be a Nobel Prize-winning recipient). Just spend more time with them and help them out by understanding what exactly they lack in. Make sure that they understand the basics better as it will help them learn the other concepts with ease.
Make your child more independent
Helping your kid in each and every step of his homework all throughout the year will not win you the medal for the best parent. Spoon-feeding is the worst thing that you can do to your child. While helping out you must ensure that your child learns with clarity the subject matter that you are working with. Let’s say your kid has to solve 5 questions of a similar pattern. If she is unable to do it by herself and approaches you then show her how the question is to be handled. You can give a demonstration with one question and then ask your child to do the remaining.
A homework spot and time
Organisation and discipline are a couple of things that every parent must seek to impart to their kids. Designating a particular space within the house and agreeing upon a stipulated time for your child to do her homework are good steps in this direction. Parenting also involves the ability to listen to your child. To ensure that your kid gets a say in selecting the time and place for homework. Take care that your child is not disturbed in her homework space and time. Short breaks would do no harm. The 5 or 10 mins break would ensure that your child remains more productive throughout the rest of the session.
Try not to command
No one likes a despot. Kids are no different. It’s always better to use persuasion over force. Threats make the task at hand sound like a punishment. ‘No TV until you’ve finished all your homework’, makes your child hate the homework while ‘once you’re done with these sums I’ll let you watch TV for an hour’ makes her feel eager to get the work done.
Encouragement
This is the most important part of a parent. Be it with her homework or with any other thing, always encourage your child. She may be doubting her abilities, and may, in fact, be not that good. But all that can change with a bit of motivation. Let your child know it when she does something good. Appreciate her. If she makes a mistake, correct her without making her feel bad. While pointing out where she went wrong, make sure you compliment her about the things that she did right.
How a child faces their homework depends on how we angle the activity to them.
